At the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, G20 Global Land Initiative (G20 GLI) spotlighted 12 exceptional youth entrepreneurs from the 2024 Youth Ecopreneur Programme (YECO). These international innovators presented land restoration solutions to combat land degradation.
The YECO Programme, launched by the G20 GLI in partnership with the International Trade Center (ITC), aims to empower 2,000 ecopreneurs over the next five years by providing mentorship, training and resources to scale businesses that restore and regenerate land. At its core is the vision of creating a “Land of Opportunities,” highlighting not only the environmental importance of land restoration but also its role as a profitable sector in the sustainable economy.
At COP16, this vision was embodied by YECO participants who leveraged the global platform to engage with investors, policymakers and stakeholders. Their participation featured impactful engagements designed to share their innovative solutions and amplify their influence on the international stage.
Daily presentations on the Innovation Stage of the Restoration Pavilion allowed YECO participants to showcase their business models and solutions. Attendees saw firsthand how these young leaders are addressing critical environmental challenges, from seed-spreading drones in Brazil to the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for sustainable farming in Kenya.
The Restoration Pavilion also featured a dedicated YECO Corner, an interactive space where visitors could meet the ecopreneurs, learn about their businesses and explore practical solutions for sustainable land management. This area became a networking hub fostering connections between ecopreneurs and conference attendees.
In addition to their participation in the Restoration Pavilion programme, four selected YECO participants competed in the prestigious “Land of Opportunity Pitch Competition,” part of the high-level innovation Action Agenda of Land Day. This event brought together industry leaders from the private sector and experts from the public sector, creating an unparalleled platform for showcasing innovation. The ecopreneurs pitched their startups to a distinguished audience and a jury of investors, corporate executives and thought leaders. Maryanne Gichanga of AgriTech Analytics Ltd emerged as the winner, securing a $50,000 grant along with in-kind support to accelerate her venture’s growth and impact.
On December 8, a small YECO Retreat took place bringing participants together for a day of reflection, strategic insights and capacity building. The retreat featured a session with Namal Impact Investment, a Saudi Arabian venture capital firm which provided valuable insights into the country’s financial landscape and opportunities for green ventures. The day was further enriched by a field visit to Prince Sultan University, where the participants were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nurunnabi, Founding Director of the Center for Sustainability and Climate and Mohammed Al-Khalid, CEO and Founder of NetZero, a leading Saudi startup in land restoration. Engaging discussions explored potential collaborations and opportunities for knowledge-sharing, strengthening ties between the ecopreneurs and local sustainability leaders.

Another highlight of the ecopreneurs’ engagement at the Restoration Pavilion was their participation in two dynamic panel discussions. The first panel focused on the critical role of youth-led businesses in advancing land restoration, offering the audience a glimpse into the entrepreneurial journeys of the YECO participants and their innovative solutions. During the second week of COP16, YECO participants took the stage again for a second side event exploring financial pathways and the challenges of scaling their ventures.
The success of YECO 2024 at COP16 highlights the transformative power of youth-led innovation in tackling global environmental challenges. Through their dedication and vision, YECO participants demonstrated that land restoration is not only a necessity but a significant opportunity, proving the attainability of a “Land of Opportunities.” However, continued investment in youth and innovation remains essential to expand this impact and create a truly sustainable and prosperous future.
Looking ahead, the YECO Programme is set to expand by welcoming a new cohort of ecopreneurs in 2025, continuing to nurture sustainable entrepreneurship and amplify solutions for land restoration. Stay tuned for updates on YECO 2025 and join us in empowering these extraordinary young leaders who are redefining the future of our planet.
