In this powerful episode of Land Talks, we speak with Rokiatu Traori, Executive Director of Herou Alliance, about building an inclusive agroforestry value chain in Mali to fight desertification, malnutrition, and poverty. After 11 years abroad, Rokiatu returned home with a bold vision: restore degraded land in the Sahel through moringa, the “super tree.” Today, Herou Alliance works with over 5,000 farmers—mainly women—and has planted more than 100,000 trees, with a goal of 10 million trees by 2030.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How agroforestry combats desertification in the Sahel,
  • Why women are central to climate action and land restoration,
  • Building profitable, inclusive value chains around moringa,
  • The challenges of climate change in Mali and
  • Learning how to negotiate for climate at an international level.

Rokiatu also shares her perspective as Mali’s agriculture and food security negotiator at COP28 and explains why empowering women leads to stronger climate solutions.
