From September 1 – 5th September, the G20 Global Land Initiative (GLI) and Instituto Terra co-hosted a unique training in Aimorés, Minas Gerais: “Land Restoration as an Opportunity for Startups and Entrepreneurs.”

For five days, 28 selected participants, from startups and impact business to associations, immersed themselves in one of the world’s most emblematic restoration landscapes –  Instituto Terra.

Founded by Sebastião and Lélia Wanick Salgado, the Institute has restored more than 3.3 million trees as part of restoring  Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest. The venue was the perfect backdrop for participants to learn how to integrate restoration into business models and to see firsthand how degraded land can be brought back to life on a large scale.

Learning in an Immersive Environment

The program blended classroom sessions, workshops, mentorship and field visits:

  • Business masterclasses covered different topics: restoration, impact modeling, financing, intellectual property and patents, leadership, and communication.
  • Technical visits included: learning directly at Instituto Terra’s nurseries and restored areas.

Instead of competition, collaboration was emphasized.

One participant noted: “This training was amazing for me. I had the opportunity to learn new things, interact with people from different regions and cultures, and grow as both a professional and a person.”

A Diverse Cohort, A Shared Mission

The training received 111 applications, with 30 participants selected (28 attended), representing:

  • 14 Brazilian states
  • 6 biomes
  • An equal balance of 15 women and 15 men

The diversity of backgrounds created a powerful exchange of ideas. As another participant put it: “Yes, I learned new and practical things, topics I didn’t even know existed, which broadened my worldview and strengthened my desire to work on land restoration.”

Impact Beyond the Training and looking ahead:

The training was more than theory: it was a step towards creating a new generation of leaders in the restoration industry

The training showed that when knowledge, collaboration and hands-on practice come together, restoration becomes more than an environmental goal; it also becomes an economic opportunity and a pathway to a shared future.

For G20 GLI, this training is the continuation of our work of building a network of ecopreneurs across Brazil and beyond and of restoring land, creating jobs and reshaping the economy for generations to come.
