When most people see the massive waves of sargassum seaweed washing up on Caribbean shores, they see a crisis. For Andrés Bisonó León, founder and CEO of SOS Carbon, it was the spark of an opportunity.

As an engineer and entrepreneur from the Dominican Republic, Andrés has dedicated his work to turning one of the region’s greatest environmental challenges into a solution for both communities and ecosystems.

Sargassum blooms are growing due to three main factors:

  1. Rising carbon levels, which act as food for algae
  2. Warming ocean temperatures
  3. Overuse of synthetic fertilizers

These massive seaweed invasions threaten coasts, communities, and livelihoods. But through SOS Carbon, Andrés and his team are pioneering a new approach:

  • Collecting sargassum at sea with local vessels
  • Employing and formally engaging local fishers
  • Transforming the algae into agricultural products that boost crop yields while reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers

The results are clear: farmers see stronger harvests and healthier soils, while coastlines are cleaner and communities benefit from new jobs.

“One of my dreams is for the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean to fully embrace the value of the blue economy—to understand that our oceans are more than just sun and sand for tourism, but a source of immense opportunity. By balancing economic activity with ecosystem protection, we can give the Caribbean a stronger global voice and drive sustainable development for our region”

Being part of the YECO 2024 program gave Andrés a platform to refine his vision, connect with global changemakers, and scale his impact.
