UNCCD COP17 honours restoration champions through RestorLife and Greenstorm Photography Awards

August 21, 2026

Ulaanbaatar, 20 August 2026 – Eight individuals and organizations received global recognition as Champions of change for restoring land or using photography to raise awareness about the vulnerability of the world’s rangelands and grasslands.

The awards brought restoration leaders together with policymakers and practitioners during the seventeenth COP session of the United Nations Convention to Combat that is underway in Ulaanbaator, Mongolia, with the RestorLife Awards presented alongside the Greenstorm Photography Awards.

Yayra Glover Limited from Ghana won the RestorLife Business Leadership Award with SELVA from Colombia receiving the RestorLife NGO Award for their work in land restoration.

Márcio Antonio Esteves Cabral’s stunning photo of Brazil’s Cerrado rangelands, the most diverse in the world, took home 10,000 United States Dollars for winning the top prize in the 17th Greenstorm Photography Festival, which received more than 14,500 submissions from 177 countries.

The top regional winners Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Northern Mediterranean region each received 1,300 United States Dollars.

Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) said“Together, these awards tell one story: we protect what we value, and we value what we are helped to see. Global transformation begins with people who are willing to care for one place, one community, one landscape  and show the world what is possible.“

Announcing one of the winners, Dr Dr Osama Faqeeha, Deputy Minister of Environment in the Ministry of Water, Energy and Agriculture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said, land degradation and drought have significant impacts on food and water security, biodiversity, climate resilience and the wellbeing of almost half the world’s population.

Participants [in competitions] are champions of nature conservation, he said, and added that the awards are storytelling tools that can be used to reach millions of people and create lasting change.

The RestorLife Awards, launched in 2025 by Restor and the G20 Global Land Initiative, received more than 400 applications for the 2026 NGO and Business Leadership Awards. Sixteen finalists were selected: 10 NGOs and six businesses.

The Greenstorm Photography Awards, whose 2026 theme, Beautiful Rangelands and Grasslands, highlighted landscapes that sustain biodiversity, livelihoods and cultures in vulnerable ecosystems. The 2026 festival marked the third year of collaboration between Greenstorm and the G20 Global Land Initiative.

Over 10,000 representatives from 197 Parties at the UNCCD COP17 are discussing drought, food security and stability, among other issues.
