For Mmakwena Moesi, growing up meant weekends surrounded by nature. With parents who tended to their family farm, she experienced firsthand the magic of how food is grown and its delicate relationship with the natural world. That connection to the land shaped her purpose—and led her to co-found Viva Organica.

At Viva Organica, Mmakwena and her team are on a mission to transform farming practices through sustainable biotech solutions. They work with farming communities to provide organic inputs and spread awareness on best sustainable practices.

The process they use is simple yet powerful:

  • Collecting and sourcing organic waste
  • Pre-composting to prepare the material
  • Introducing the waste to worms and microbes, which consume and enrich it
  • Producing a nutrient-rich compost fortified with natural plant growth hormones

The result? What Mmakwena calls “gold” for the soil—a product that boosts crop yields while healing the land.

Being part of the YECO 2024 program gave her the tools, mentorship, and community to scale this vision. Through YECO, she connected with global changemakers, honed her skills, and found inspiration to keep pushing forward.
