The Arab world faces significant environmental challenges, with marginal lands affected by high salinity, water scarcity, and extreme heat. Climate change intensifies these issues, leading to droughts and desertification that threaten agricultural productivity and food security. In response, biosaline agriculture—using salt-tolerant crops and sustainable water management—emerges as a vital approach to land restoration in the region.

To support these efforts, the G20 Global Land Initiative (hosted by UNCCD) partnered with the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), the League of Arab States, and specialized Arab organizations to deliver a focused training course titled “Biosaline Agriculture as an Approach to Land Restoration in the Arab World”. Held at the League of Arab States Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, the event brought together 24 participants from 13 countries to explore the potential transformation biosaline agriculture could bring to arid and saline environments.
