GLI to feature women and youth prominently at the Nairobi landscapes Conference

September 29, 2023

Bonn, 29/09/23 – One billion hectares of land are up for restoration by 2030. Achieving such an ambitious target will require countries to restore degraded land on an industrial scale and to jump-start a land-restoration economy.

The G20, through its Global Land Initiative (G20 GLI), is eyeing both the private sector and women and youth to lead the action and reap the benefits from it, such as jobs, healthy and nutritious foods, fertile soils and climate-change resilient homes.

And it is making women and youth in developing countries in particular, audacious at creating start-ups in this new economy. G20 GLI, is planning joint activities with Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) to present, such initiatives during the GLF Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference titled, A New Vision for Earth.

The Conference will take place on 11-12 October 2023 in a hybrid format, with in-person participation in Nairobi, Kenya. G20 GLI, one of the Conference sponsors, began operations a year ago, and is participating in the Forum (GLF) for the first time.

The mandate of G20 GLI is to enable the G20 countries to achieve their ambition to reduce land degradation by 50 per cent by 2040.

At the Conference, G20 GLI will host a pavilion with events related to its mission, such as campaigns and capacity building activities. They include a session on women in land restoration and a consultation with young people to contribute to the development of an engagement strategy for G20 GLI designed by youth for youth.

Most G20 GLI events will be livestreamed on YouTube. However, pre-registration is required to participate in the in-person only youth consultation.
