Urbanization has brought innovation and employment but also pollution, heat, land degradation and a human health crisis. The challenge is how to revitalize degraded urban areas, while prioritizing ecological, social and economic sustainability.

Tackling these challenges requires innovative and transdisciplinary approaches to land restoration that are not adequately covered in most urban planning or landscape architecture university courses.

“Trigger Change! Innovations in Sustainable Urban Land Restoration” is a new, open-source course by the G20 Global Land Initiative/United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification (G20 GLI/UNCCD).

Developed for universities and training institutions teaching urban planning, urban geography, landscape architecture and related topics, this course fills a critical gap in urban education by focusing on land restoration, sustainability and innovation.

Educators can now freely access and use five interactive modules, global case studies and creative assignments to assist students to turn ideas into action.

The launch webinar on 07 May 2025 featured Dr. Muralee Thummarukudy, Director of the  G20 GLI/UNCCD, who said:  “Cities are places of rapid growth and innovation but [they are] also increasingly suffering from the impacts of climate change. Our course fills a critical gap in urban planning and related programmes, which often overlook the important benefits that people get from nature in cities.”

Professor, Dr. Shen Xiaomeng, Vice-Rector in Europe, United Nations University (UNU) and the Director of UNU – Institute for Environment and Human Security, which is a leading course partner, said, “This course has developed a new paradigm for thinking about ecosystems in cities for more transformative and proactive approaches to urban planning.”

The transdisciplinary university Master’s course is designed for educators and practitioners committed to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship and interactive, transdisciplinary teaching for sustainable urban development. Academics and professionals in urban planning and sustainability developed the course, which was then peer reviewed by experts from universities worldwide.
