Alexey V. Alekseenko

Dr. Alexey V. Alekseenko is an environmental scientist with a double doctoral degree in geo-engineering from the two world’s oldest institutes of resources, TU Bergakademie Freiberg and St Petersburg Mining University. Alexey is skilled in managing environmental and resource projects for industries extracting coal, metals, diamonds, and building materials. He has over 15 years of experience in topics ranging from pollution monitoring to the assessment and restoration of ecosystems disturbed by open-pit, underground, and placer mining. Alexey has conducted both field and desktop research on environmental resources affected by mining in Colombia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Mozambique, Russia, and South Africa. At UNU-FLORES, he focuses on sustainable and resource-effective post-mining transitions. Alexey heads the Institute’s branch in Weisswasser, Germany, with a special focus on the revitalization of post-coal landscapes. He aims to position the Lusatian lignite mining district as a model for numerous coal transition regions facing similar challenges.
