Data to restore land

The Global Restoration Information Hub and the new, cutting-edge Geospatial Data Platform for Land Restoration are two of the most powerful tools yet established to accelerate the G20’s ambition to reduce degraded land by half by 2040. These platforms empower countries and organizations to strengthen their restoration commitments and scale their efforts.

They offer decision-makers and land users more than just open and accessible data on land degradation, conservation commitments, sustainable practices, restoration success stories, and lessons learned.

Critically, they address a longstanding gap in monitoring land degradation and restoration among the 197 Parties to the UNCCD. Parties can now combine diverse datasets and physical evidence to track threats—such as wildfires and droughts—in near real-time. They can monitor landscape changes, accurately assess their progress in preventing, reducing, or reversing land degradation and access the best policy and legislation from around the world a click-of-a-mouse.

Geospatial Data Platform for
Land Restoration

The Geospatial Platform developed by the G20 Global Land Initiative helps to track the land restoration commitments made by countries under four global processes: Climate Change, Biological Diversity, Desertification and Land Degradation and the Bonn Challenge. It offers reliable data for decision-makers to tackle land degradation through maps, indicators and trends that highlight the priority areas for conservation or restoration.​​

Restoration Information Hub

The hub was built with contributions from citizen scientists from 84 countries and provides simplified access to critical information, promotes collaboration, offers a platform for learning, tracks global restoration commitments, serves as a database of restoration institutions and platforms, acts as a legislation database, and tracks events for anyone interested in land restoration. For this initiative, one performance indicator is ten thousand case studies projected by 2040.
