Land degradation poses significant global challenges, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The region’s population in 2022 was 15% of the global population, and is projected to rise to 35% by 2100. More than 80% of the region’s farms are operated by smallholders, who produce 90% of the food.

But unsustainable practices and deforestation have degraded nearly 70% of its lands, leading to erosion, nutrient loss, and reduced agricultural productivity. Climate change is making the situation worse, threatening food security and forcing internal migration.

Sustainable landscape management (SLM), which integrates ecological, social, and economic strategies have the potential to restore the degraded lands, enhance resilience and ensure equitable resource use.

The workshop hosted by AfricaRice in Senegal will equip 30 participants, including scientists, extension agents and policymakers, with tools and techniques on Sustainable Land Management.

The workshop is designed into five modules, which blend theoretical training on resilient landscapes, climate-smart agriculture and inclusive policies with field visits to the Senegal River Valley. The structure is expected to foster knowledge exchange and collaboration to scale sustainable solutions and enhance the livelihoods of SSA communities.
