On 28 March 2025, we celebrated the first anniversary of our open-source university course, Trigger Change! Innovative Sustainable Agriculture Solutions for Land Restoration,” with 60 academics and practitioners from Europe and beyond in attendance.

The workshop was organized by the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) (University of Bern), WOCAT – World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (Switzerland) and University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), with contributions from CIFOR-ICRAF, Azim Premji University (India) and TH-Köln – University of Applied Sciences (Germany).

Participants reviewed the course’s main topics, featured a practical session on using the WOCAT database and showcased innovations in land restoration!

Prof. Dr. Thomas Breu, Director of CDE, University of Bern, said, “We highly welcome this effort by the G20 Global Land Initiative/UNCCD to provide open-source materials for universities and training institutions worldwide.  This initiative comes at a crucial moment, as nationalism rises and collaboration declines.”

Just a week before, from 17-20 March, our partners at the University of Cuenca (Ecuador), TH-Köln, CDE and WOCAT hosted over 100 participants from Latin America to explore the course and engage with experts in sustainable agriculture and land restoration innovations.

Both workshops helped launch new communities of practice to promote the course’s uptake, foster collaboration and share news on related topics.
