G20 Global Land Initiative (GLI), United Nations University (UNU-FLORES) and LaRSSA are jointly hosting a 5-day workshop providing a comprehensive overview of post-mining land restoration, including essential topics, practical techniques, and real-world examples. The workshop, scheduled for March 10-14, 2025, in Johannesburg, South Africa, features both classroom sessions and field trips offering a participatory and interactive experience. Designed to immerse Pan-African participants in the nuances of post-mining land restoration, the curriculum spans environmental, economic, and land-use driven climate change mitigation facets. This workshop will emphasize the vital role of the restoration economy, underscoring the importance of harnessing private sector expertise—particularly in knowledge, innovation, and financial coordination—to create sustainable and impactful restoration solutions

Participants will explore diverse case studies, covering open-cast and underground mines, with solutions including revegetation, flooding, stabilization for renewable energy production, and remediation for risk reduction. The site tours will highlight the restoration of virgin ecosystems while addressing the delicate balance between ecosystem services and socioeconomic development.

Limited funding is available from GLI to support participants interested in this mining restoration workshop. To be considered for funding, please complete the relevant questions below. The application deadline is February 03, 2025, and space is limited, so early applications are encouraged.

The organising team will select participants considering gender, sectors, countries, and experiences to ensure a diversity of actors are included in this workshop. After the selection process, you will receive more information about the event.
