2024 Grants Programme

Empowering Grassroots Restoration: 2024 G20 GLI Grants Programme

In 2024, the G20 Global Land Initiative (GLI) launched the first round of its small grants programme to support community-driven restoration projects across the globe. Civil society organizations, regardless of their location, were invited to apply for grants ranging from US$5,000 to US$15,000, with priority given to those accredited with the UNCCD. The programme received an overwhelming response, with over 650 applications submitted from 100 countries. After a rigorous selection process, 39 organizations were awarded funding for impactful projects focused on soil restoration, agroforestry, water resource management, sustainable agriculture, and capacity-building.

The grants programme highlighted the power of grassroots innovation in addressing land degradation and promoting sustainable land management. Three of the highest-scoring projects were showcased at a side event during the UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh, offering international visibility and recognition. Beyond funding, the G20 GLI emphasized collaboration and knowledge sharing, with future opportunities extended to applicants who were not selected. This inaugural round laid a strong foundation for scaling up restoration efforts and set the stage for a broader and more ambitious second round of grants in 2025.
